For more than 500 young people in Enugu, a digital skills programme has become more than an opportunity to learn technology, it has become a pathway towards new careers, recognised qualifications and participation in the global digital economy.
When the Enugu Digital Skills Grant was introduced, the ambition was not simply to place young people in another training programme. The objective was to create a credible pathway through which Ndi Enugu could access globally relevant technology education without the financial barriers that often prevent talented young people from pursuing careers in the digital economy.
Through the Enugu MSME & Startup Agency (Enugu SME Center), the State partnered with AltSchool Africa and private-sector partners to make access to quality technology training more affordable for young residents.
More than 500 young Ndi Enugu subsequently joined the programme, pursuing career pathways spanning Software Engineering, Data, Cybersecurity, Cloud Engineering, Product Design, Product Management and other high-demand technology fields.
But behind the impressive enrolment figure lies a much more important story.
Every participant represents an individual decision to acquire a new skill, pursue a different career path and compete in an economy where technology is increasingly shaping how businesses operate and how people work.
For some, it means learning to code. For others, it means discovering how to analyse data, secure digital systems, build cloud-based solutions, design products or manage technology projects.
It is also about changing perceptions of what is possible.
A young person who may previously have considered a global technology career out of reach can now access training designed around internationally relevant skills and begin building a portfolio capable of opening doors beyond Enugu.
The journeys of these participants form the heart of a new documentary capturing their experiences, ambitions and perspectives—putting human faces behind the statistics and showing what digital skills development can mean in the lives of young people.
The initiative reflects the human capital development strategy of the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, which places emphasis on connecting young people with quality training, reducing barriers to accessing such opportunities and strengthening the pathway from skills acquisition to employment, entrepreneurship and enterprise creation.
Rather than viewing digital training simply as classroom education, the approach seeks to make skills development a bridge to the wider global economy.
The significance extends beyond the more than 500 beneficiaries. As participants acquire expertise in fields such as software engineering, cybersecurity, data and cloud technology, they become part of a growing pool of talent capable of contributing to businesses, building technology solutions and competing for opportunities in an increasingly borderless labour market.
For Enugu, the bigger ambition is therefore clear: develop people who can compete locally, nationally and globally while creating new economic value from the knowledge and skills they acquire.
The Enugu Digital Skills Grant is ultimately a story about people, not just programmes, figures or certificates.
It is about young Ndi Enugu learning, adapting, creating and preparing themselves for the future.
Because the goal is not simply to teach digital skills.
It is to build Enugu’s next generation of global talent.
