The Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, yesterday flagged off the distribution of bags of fertilisers and other agricultural inputs to farmers across the Local Government Area, in furtherance of the agricultural transformation agenda of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

The intervention forms part of the broader State-wide initiative of Governor Mbah to distribute free agricultural inputs, including fertilisers and seedlings, to 63,000 farmers across Enugu State. The initiative demonstrates the Governor’s recognition that the foundation of a prosperous, food-secure and self-sustaining Enugu State must be firmly rooted in a vibrant and productive agricultural sector.

As Governor Mbah aptly reminds us, “The future of every great economy is first planted in the soil.” This represents a deliberate policy direction aimed at repositioning agriculture as a major driver of food security, employment, wealth creation and agro-industrial development.

For the people of Igbo-Eze South, the intervention represents a significant boost to the efforts of hardworking farmers. The excitement and appreciation witnessed during the distribution clearly demonstrated the importance of government interventions that directly touch the lives and livelihoods of ordinary citizens.

Speaking through the implementation of his Progress Agenda, Barr. Ferdinand Ukwueze reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring that the benefits of Governor Mbah’s agricultural programmes reach the grassroots.

By providing farmers with essential inputs, government is helping them cultivate more land, increase productivity, improve household income and contribute meaningfully to the local economy.

The initiative also aligns with Governor Mbah’s “Tomorrow Is Here” vision, which places strong emphasis on building a productive, prosperous and economically resilient Enugu State.

Barr. Ukwueze therefore encouraged all beneficiaries to utilise the inputs judiciously and maximise the opportunity to move from subsistence farming towards commercial agriculture, wealth creation and sustainable economic empowerment.

“When we empower the farmer, we strengthen the family. When we strengthen the farmer, we strengthen the local economy.”
