...Elders, Residents Hail Gov. Mbah for Making Traditional Autonomy a Reality, Pledge Support for New Monarch
There was widespread jubilation and excitement in Umuchigbo Autonomous Community, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, as the people celebrated the formal installation of their traditional ruler, His Royal Highness, Igwe Jude Agu, following the presentation of his Staff of Office by the Enugu State Government.
The historic ceremony, which took place on July 27, 2026, marked another significant milestone in the history of the community, with residents and elders describing the emergence of Igwe Jude Agu as the fulfilment of a long-standing aspiration.
The Staff of Office was formally presented to the traditional ruler, formerly known as Chief Jude Agu, by the Enugu State Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters and Rural Development, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, officially conferring on him the status and recognition of His Royal Highness, Igwe Jude Agu.
Umuchigbo Autonomous Community attained autonomous status on May 24, 2023, paving the way for the community to have its own traditional institution and ruler.
The development has since generated excitement across the three villages that make up the autonomous community, with elders, leaders and residents expressing appreciation to the Enugu State Government for bringing the process to fruition.
Speaking on behalf of the community, elders from the various kindreds poured out their gratitude to the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, describing the presentation of the Staff of Office as a landmark development that has given practical expression to the community's long-held dream of having a recognised traditional ruler.
The elders commended Governor Mbah for what they described as his commitment to strengthening grassroots institutions and responding to the aspirations of communities across Enugu State.
The Eldest Man of the community, Elder Clement Emehelu of Umuezeoha Kindred, expressed gratitude to the Governor and the state government, saying the emergence and official recognition of Igwe Jude Agu had brought joy and a renewed sense of unity to Umuchigbo.
He noted that the people were particularly grateful that their autonomous status had progressed to the point where their traditional institution could now function with full official recognition.
Also speaking, Elder Edwin Nnamani of Umunshokene Kindred thanked Governor Mbah for listening to the aspirations of the people and supporting the process that culminated in the emergence of the new monarch.
According to him, the development demonstrates that the government is paying attention to communities at the grassroots and giving them a sense of belonging in the administration of the state.
Similarly, Elder Cyril Nnamani of Umuezeoha Kindred described the occasion as a historic moment for the community, stressing that the people were happy with the choice of Igwe Jude Agu.
He said the new traditional ruler had, over the years, demonstrated qualities that earned him the confidence and trust of the people, adding that his antecedents and longstanding reputation made him deserving of the throne.
For Elder Geoffrey Ubosi of Umuchiene Kindred, the emergence of Igwe Jude Agu represents a new chapter for Umuchigbo.
He congratulated the new monarch and urged all sons and daughters of the community to rally around him, stressing that unity, peace and cooperation would be essential to the development of the autonomous community.
The elders collectively described HRH Igwe Jude Agu as "the chosen one," expressing confidence in his ability to provide purposeful traditional leadership and unite the various communities and kindreds under his reign.
They also reaffirmed their support for the new monarch, saying his emergence was not merely a traditional development but an opportunity for the community to consolidate its unity, pursue development and strengthen its relationship with the Enugu State Government.
The community leaders equally used the occasion to commend Governor Mbah for what they described as his innovative approach to governance and leadership excellence, noting that Umuchigbo Autonomous Community has been among the communities benefiting from the administration's renewed attention to grassroots development.
They said the transformation taking place across Enugu State under Governor Mbah had created renewed optimism among communities, adding that the government's development-oriented approach was increasingly being felt beyond the state capital.
The people of Umuchigbo therefore expressed appreciation to Governor Mbah for facilitating the recognition and installation of their traditional ruler, while pledging their continued cooperation and support for his administration.
While the celebrations continue, the community has called on all sons and daughters of Umuchigbo to embrace the new traditional institution and work with HRH Igwe Jude Agu towards peace, unity, progress and sustainable development.
The presentation of the Staff of Office has consequently been described as more than a ceremonial event, it is a defining moment in the history of Umuchigbo Autonomous Community and a new beginning for its traditional institution.
