Saturday, June 27, 2026, will forever remain one of such memorable days in the annals of Umualor in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State. It was a day when tears of displacement gave way to songs of thanksgiving, when broken hopes were restored, and when a government once again demonstrated that the true measure of leadership lies in its unwavering commitment to the welfare of its people.
The official flag-off of the reintegration of internally displaced persons from Odobido, Egerum, Ikeagwu, Igbogobe and other affected hamlets within the Umuezuboke community marked not merely the distribution of relief materials but the restoration of dignity, security, belonging and confidence in government. It was the practical expression of Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah's people-centred philosophy of governance; a philosophy that insists that no community, regardless of its location, should be abandoned in moments of pain.
The event was coordinated by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Strategic Communications, Dr. Collins Ogbu, Esq., who, beyond his official responsibilities, undertook relentless engagements and sustained interface with the Enugu State Government to ensure that the cries of his people did not go unheard. Through consistent advocacy, consultations and representations before relevant government institutions, Dr. Ogbu championed the cause of the displaced families until government intervention became a reality. His unwavering commitment reflected not only the responsibilities of public office but also the burden of a son determined to restore hope to his ancestral homeland.
The occasion attracted an impressive gathering of government officials, traditional institutions, religious leaders, women, youths and members of the affected communities. Leading the delegation of the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) was its Director-General, Hon. Mrs. Chinasa Mba, while the Executive Chairman of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, Barr. Obiora Obeagu, the Member representing Isi-Uzo Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Gabriel Eze, traditional rulers, community leaders and other distinguished personalities joined the people in celebrating what many described as the beginning of a new chapter of peace and restoration.
The atmosphere at Aba Square was one of uncommon joy. Long before the official commencement of the programme, men, women, children and the elderly gathered in large numbers, their faces radiating excitement and gratitude. For families who had endured the trauma of displacement since 2024 following the unfortunate inter-communal conflict with the Amankanu community; a crisis that claimed the lives of seven indigenes and displaced more than 10,000 residents of Odobido as well as other close Hamlets in Umuezuboke, Umualor, the event represented far more than the distribution of humanitarian relief. It symbolized the reassuring presence of a government that has not forgotten its people and marked the beginning of their safe return home with renewed hope, restored confidence, and the promise of rebuilding their lives and livelihoods.
In his address, Dr. Collins Ogbu expressed profound appreciation to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for responding compassionately to the plight of the displaced persons. He noted that the Governor's intervention had once again affirmed his reputation as a responsive, empathetic and visionary leader whose administration places the welfare of ordinary citizens above every other consideration. Speaking on behalf of the affected communities, Dr. Ogbu assured the Governor that the people of Umualor would never forget this remarkable demonstration of love and compassion. He emphasized that the restoration of peace and the reintegration of displaced families had rekindled hope among the people and strengthened their confidence in government.
Consequently, he declared that the overwhelming gratitude of the community would naturally find expression in steadfast political support for Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah's re-election bid and for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. Also addressing the gathering, the Executive Chairman of Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, Barr. Obiora Obeagu, assured the returning families of their safety and the government's continued commitment to sustaining peace throughout the area. He commended Governor Peter Mbah for the unprecedented pace of development across Isi-Uzo, highlighting landmark projects such as the ongoing dual-carriage highway connecting Owo through Umualor to Ikem, the establishment of Smart Green Schools, the construction of Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, and the remarkable improvements in security architecture across the local government.
Barr. Obeagu equally empathized with the displaced families and, in a further demonstration of solidarity, donated cash and one hundred bags of fertilizer to support their return to farming and economic recovery.
Other goodwill messages were delivered by the Parish Priest of St. Anthony's Parish, Umualor, Rev. Fr. Francis Ede; the Member representing Isi-Uzo Constituency, Hon. Gabriel Eze; and the Traditional Prime Minister of Umualor, Onowu Thomas Agbo. They unanimously applauded Governor Peter Mbah for bringing government closer to the grassroots and described the intervention as evidence of a compassionate administration that listens to the cries of its people and responds with decisive action.
The highpoint of the ceremony was the formal presentation of relief materials by the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency under the leadership of Hon. Mrs. Chinasa Mba.
