Doctors Endorse State's Agricultural Inputs Distribution Programme, Highlight Link Between Food Security and Public Health

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State Chapter, has commended the Enugu State Government for its sustained investment in agriculture and food security, describing the initiative as a critical pathway to improved health outcomes and overall wellbeing of residents.

The commendation followed the Association's participation in the official flag-off of the 2026 Agricultural Inputs Distribution Programme to registered farmers across the 260 political wards of Enugu State. The programme, which marks its third consecutive year, was officially launched by the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Rtn. Dr. Sunday Okafor, the NMA described it as a privilege to witness the ceremony, noting that the Governor reaffirmed his administration's commitment to tackling insecurity through increased food production and strengthened food security across the state.

According to the Association, as the umbrella body of medical doctors in Enugu State and the leading voice of the health professional community, it recognizes that health security and food security are inseparable, stressing that access to safe, nutritious and affordable food remains one of the most important social determinants of health.

The Association explained that adequate nutrition plays a vital role in preventing malnutrition, reducing the burden of diseases, strengthening the immune system, improving maternal and child health, and enhancing the overall quality of life for citizens.

NMA further observed that sustained investment in agriculture delivers significant public health benefits beyond food production. It noted that agricultural development contributes to poverty reduction, improved household nutrition, enhanced mental wellbeing, stronger community resilience, and the reduction of social conditions that often fuel insecurity and ill health.

"A healthy population cannot be achieved without a secure and sustainable food system," the Association stated.

The medical body therefore applauded the Enugu State Government for maintaining policies and programmes that promote agricultural productivity while empowering farmers at the grassroots. It also urged beneficiaries of the agricultural inputs distribution programme to make effective and responsible use of the support provided in order to maximize food production and contribute to the state's vision of food sufficiency and economic prosperity.

The Association equally called on community leaders, development partners, agricultural extension workers, healthcare professionals, and the private sector to strengthen collaboration in advancing initiatives that integrate agriculture, nutrition, and public health.

According to the NMA, addressing the social determinants of health requires coordinated, multisectoral action, with agriculture remaining one of the strongest pillars for building healthier communities.

Reaffirming its commitment to the people of the state, the Association pledged continued partnership with the Enugu State Government and other relevant stakeholders in promoting evidence-based policies and programmes that improve the health and wellbeing of all residents.

The statement concluded with a call for collective action, expressing confidence that through sustained collaboration, Enugu State can achieve a healthier, food-secure and more prosperous future.
