Several passengers are feared dead following the derailment of a train operating on the Warri–Itakpe corridor on Monday.
Although the exact number of casualties has not yet been officially confirmed, rescue and assessment operations are ongoing at the scene.
Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) said emergency response teams and relevant authorities had been deployed to provide assistance to affected passengers and manage the situation.
In a statement signed by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, the corporation said:
"The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirms that an incident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) occurred today. Emergency response teams and relevant authorities are currently at the scene attending to the situation and providing necessary assistance."
The statement further noted that the corporation was closely monitoring developments and would issue a detailed update as more information becomes available.
Authorities are expected to release further details as investigations and rescue operations continue.
