The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has issued a strong public notice prohibiting the defacement, destruction, and unauthorised use of bus shelters and transport infrastructure across the state, warning that violators will face stiff penalties, including fines and possible prosecution.

In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Odumegwu Chinwendu, the government expressed concern over the increasing misuse of public transport facilities through the indiscriminate posting of adverts and notices, describing such actions as illegal and detrimental to the state’s urban development goals.

The Ministry emphasized that the directive is part of the broader vision of the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to build a modern, clean, and organised transport system that reflects global standards.

The full statement reads:

PUBLIC NOTICE

DEFACEMENT AND DESTRUCTION OF BUS SHELTERS AND TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED

The Enugu State Ministry of Transport hereby notifies the general public, businesses, organisations, advertisers, and all residents that the defacement, destruction, or unauthorised use of bus shelters and public transport infrastructure across the State is strictly prohibited.

The newly developed bus shelters and transport infrastructure are public assets built through significant government investment aimed at creating a cleaner, safer, more organised, and modern transportation system for Ndi Enugu.

The Ministry has observed with serious concern the increasing placement of posters, stickers, banners, handbills, and other unauthorised advertisements on bus shelters and related public infrastructure across the State. Such acts are illegal, unacceptable, and will no longer be tolerated.

Please be informed of the following:

  • No posters, stickers, banners, advertisements, handbills, or public notices shall be placed on any bus shelter or transport infrastructure without express approval from the Enugu State Government through the Ministry of Transport.

  • Any individual, organisation, business, or agent found defacing, damaging, or illegally using public transport infrastructure shall be sanctioned accordingly, including the payment of heavy fines and possible legal prosecution.

  • Enforcement teams have been mandated to monitor public transport infrastructure across the State and ensure full compliance with this directive.

This directive forms part of the Enugu State Government’s broader behavioural change campaign aimed at promoting civic responsibility, environmental cleanliness, orderliness, and respect for public infrastructure.

The continued defacement of public infrastructure increases maintenance and cleaning costs, creates visual disorder, damages the aesthetics of the State, and undermines the vision of a modern and organised Enugu.

The Government therefore calls on all residents and stakeholders to support the protection, preservation, and responsible use of these public assets for the collective benefit of all.

Together, let us keep Enugu clean, organised, and beautiful.

Signed:
Odumegwu Chinwendu
PRO, Enugu State Ministry of Transport

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and urged residents to cooperate with enforcement teams to sustain the state’s ongoing urban renewal efforts.
