Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has officially announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing growing uncertainty and internal challenges within the party.

Obi made this known on Sunday through a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he expressed deep concern over what he described as a deteriorating political climate and persistent internal crises within the ADC.

In his statement, Obi explained that his decision was not influenced by any personal conflict with key figures in the party, including the National Chairman, David Mark, or former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, both of whom he said he continues to respect.

However, he noted that the same systemic issues that plagued his time in the Labour Party, such as internal disputes, legal battles, and divisions, have begun to manifest within the ADC. According to him, these challenges have hindered the party’s ability to focus on addressing pressing national concerns.

Obi described the Nigerian political environment as increasingly hostile, marked by intimidation, insecurity, and a culture where sincerity and humility are often misunderstood. He lamented that individuals committed to genuine service are frequently subjected to criticism and misrepresentation, even within their own political circles.

He further emphasized that his resignation was a difficult but necessary step to allow peace within the party, stating that even after stepping away, he continues to face scrutiny and attacks on his character.

Reaffirming his commitment to national development, Obi stressed that his political ambition is not driven by the pursuit of power, but by a desire to see a better Nigeria, one where citizens feel safe, basic needs are met, and leadership is grounded in justice, compassion, and accountability.

Despite his exit from the ADC, Obi maintained that he remains hopeful about Nigeria’s future and committed to contributing to the emergence of competent and people-oriented leadership in the country.
