A frontline governorship aspirant for the 2027 Enugu State governorship election, Prof. Jehu Onyekwere Nnaji, has officially dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Prof. Nnaji, who spoke with journalists via telephone from Germany, attributed his resignation from the ADC to what he described as persistent litigations and internal disharmony within the party, which he said had crippled meaningful political progress.
According to him, the move to the NDC aligns with the political vision of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the quest for a “New Nigeria.”
“I wish to use this medium to thank my supporters for having faith in me, and I pray that our entry into the new party in furtherance of Mr. Peter Obi’s vision of a possible New Nigeria will be a huge success,” Nnaji stated.
Prof. Nnaji, a Professor of International Law and Global Politics, previously contested the 2023 Enugu governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before stepping down for the current Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
He also contested for the Enugu East Senatorial seat in 2019 and is widely known for his academic contributions in international law, European politics, and global governance.
Among his notable works are publications on EU enlargement, migration, and post-World War II political transformations in Eastern and Western Europe.
The academic scholar is associated with the University of Kansas Law School in the United States and has earned several international recognitions, including a Merit Award at the University of Naples, Italy. He was also listed as a Vice Chancellor candidate for both ESUT in 2015 and Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2024.
His defection comes amid growing political realignments in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 elections.
Recall that a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Harrison Ogara, had earlier defected from the ADC to the NDC, citing similar concerns over internal crises and litigations within the party.
