The Enugu State Government has distanced itself from the reported suspension of a health assistant trainee, Miss Stella Makuochukwu Eze, clarifying that the disciplinary action was taken solely by a private institution, Ezzy Healthcare College, and has no connection to the state. While addressing concerns surrounding the viral incident, the government emphasized that it neither oversees nor interferes in the internal affairs of private institutions, even as it reiterated its ongoing efforts to transform and strengthen healthcare delivery across the state under Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

PRESS RELEASE

Enugu State Government: We Have No Hand in Health Assistant Trainee’s Suspension

1. The Enugu State Government has noted with concern a trending report alleging the suspension of a health assistant trainee, Miss Stella Makuochukwu Eze, by her institution, Ezzy Healthcare College.

2. For the avoidance of doubt, Miss Eze is neither a student of any Enugu State-owned health institution nor an employee of the State Civil Service. Her reported suspension was ostensibly due to a breach of her institution’s code of conduct, an internal administrative matter within a private institution, which has no bearing whatsoever on the Government of Enugu State. The Government is not involved in the internal affairs or disciplinary processes of the private college and is only conveying information as made available to it.

3. Nonetheless, the Government has engaged the college and relevant stakeholders in response to concerns arising from the viral video involving her and a colleague.

4. The Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, reiterates its unwavering commitment to the transformation of the healthcare sector.

5. Since inception, this administration has prioritised far-reaching reforms aimed at repositioning healthcare delivery across the state, following a comprehensive audit of the sector.

6. Notably, the Government has already commenced the rollout of 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, strategically located across the 260 political wards in the state to expand access to quality primary care. Additionally, over 2,250 primary healthcare workers have been recruited to strengthen PHC services.

7. Concurrently, the rehabilitation of general hospitals is ongoing, including secondary healthcare facilities such as Uwani General Hospital, where the reported incident occurred.

8. Health training institutions in the state are also witnessing significant improvements. Recently, the ESUT College of Medicine was reaccredited, with the Medical Council approving an increased admission quota of 350 for Medicine and Surgery - the highest among state-owned institutions in Nigeria.

9. The flagship 300-bed Enugu International Hospital, a state-of-the-art, super-specialist facility designed to strengthen specialised medical services and curb outbound medical tourism is nearing completion.

10. Massive infrastructural upgrades are also at an advanced stage of completion at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, Enugu. These include the construction of a twin six-floor Laboratory and Clinical Complex (comprising ICUs, theatres, wards, pharmacy, and teaching and research facilities), a seven-floor Nursing Complex with an MRI Diagnostic Suite, and a new two-floor Accident and Emergency Department.

11. The remodelling and expansion of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) Teaching Hospital, Igbo-Eno, has been completed. The second teaching hospital is now recruiting suitable medical and allied professionals to commence full-scale services.

12. The Government encourages residents to utilise healthcare facilities within their communities and reaffirms its openness to constructive feedback. The administration remains committed to accountability, continuous improvement, and the delivery of quality healthcare services to all Ndi Enugu.

Dr. Malachy Agbo
