As preparations for the forthcoming convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled for March 27–28, 2026 in Abuja gather momentum, one name already gaining strong attention as a possible consensus candidate for the influential position of National Deputy Chairman (South) is Ben Nwoye.

Anyone conversant with the formation of the APC, its activities, and its trajectory in both national politics and the politics of Enugu State knows that Dr. Nwoye needs little introduction.

In Enugu State, where Dr. Nwoye served as chairman of the party for eight years between 2014 and 2021, he was widely regarded as the face and driving force of the party. This was despite internal wranglings at the time, orchestrated by some elements within and outside the party who wished the party ill and hoped it would fade into political extinction in the state.

During this turbulent period, Dr. Nwoye diplomatically and resolutely navigated these challenges with finesse and political maturity. His leadership ensured that the party remained afloat, united, and structurally strong in the state, even while operating as an opposition party.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the APC in Enugu State experienced fresh internal challenges, following the sponsored and unconstitutional expulsion of Dr. Nwoye and some major stakeholders and founding members of the party in the state. Rather than resorting to violence or political confrontation to reclaim his position, Dr. Nwoye, being a lawyer and statesman, adopted a legal approach. This eventually led to the court nullifying his expulsion along with that of other party leaders.

Through the overt, covert, and selfless efforts of Dr. Nwoye, working with other key leaders of the APC at the state and national levels, as well as the Presidency, strategic political realignments began to unfold in the state. These developments strengthened the party’s structure and influence in Enugu State.

It was this rare and strategic political engagement that eventually culminated in Dr. Nwoye’s emergence as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, a development that significantly repositioned the party in the state and strengthened its relationship with the national leadership.

This reconnection of Enugu State with the ruling party at the centre has continued to hold significant political and economic implications for the state and its people. Considering that Enugu is widely regarded as the political and symbolic headquarters of the South-East region, its stronger alignment with the centre potentially enhances the region’s political relevance and access to federal opportunities.

It is often said that the reward for good work is more work. There is little doubt that Dr. Nwoye has consistently and selflessly contributed to sustaining, repositioning, and strengthening the APC not only in Enugu State but across the South-East region since the party’s formation. In view of this reality, many believe he deserves a larger national role that will enable him work more closely with party leaders and stakeholders across the southern region.

To say that Dr. Nwoye is qualified for a national party position would be an understatement.

Beyond being a committed party loyalist, he has paid his dues through years of steadfast dedication. His approach to party politics, his ability to maintain relationships across political divides, and his calm temperament in handling complex issues have distinguished him among his contemporaries.

Having served the party diligently during difficult times and demonstrated sincerity and firmness of purpose, electing Dr. Nwoye as APC National Deputy Chairman (South) could further strengthen the party’s presence and acceptance in the southern part of Nigeria, particularly in the South-East.

Beyond politics, Dr. Nwoye has also built an impressive professional career in both the private and public sectors.

While in the United States, he practiced as a civil rights lawyer, representing individuals in cases involving institutions and government agencies. Before establishing his own law firm, he worked with the renowned Johnnie Cochran Law Firm in Chicago, where his work focused primarily on civil litigation involving civil liberties and the protection of life and rights.

Dr. Nwoye is a Nigerian legal practitioner, corporate executive, political strategist, and academic with over three decades of professional experience spanning both Nigeria and the United States. He is widely known for combining international legal expertise with a deep understanding of Nigeria’s corporate and political environments.

Currently, he serves as a Visiting Lecturer at the Institute for Peace, Conflict and Development Studies at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), where he teaches courses on Governance, National Cohesion, and Conflict Management.

Born on May 28, 1964, in Enugu State, he hails from Amuri in Nkanu West Local Government Area. He is married and blessed with children.

Dr. Nwoye holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Illinois Chicago in the United States. He obtained his West African School Certificate from Akpo Grammar School, Ozuoba, Rivers State, and his First School Leaving Certificate from Ama-Igbo Primary School, Diobu, Port Harcourt.

Over the years, he has held significant leadership roles across law, corporate management, and politics. In the United States, he served as Principal Partner at Mendoza and Nwoye PLC, a law firm he co-founded, where he practiced corporate, civil, and immigration law while overseeing the firm’s administration.

In Nigeria, he serves as Executive Director of Opeans Nigeria Ltd, overseeing strategic planning, operations, financial management, business development, and client relations. He is also the Managing Director of Offshore Resort Ltd in Warri, Delta State, where he manages hospitality operations, marketing strategy, financial performance, and service delivery.

By every standard and measure, the position of Deputy National Chairman (South) appears well suited to Dr. Nwoye. His record of leadership, political resilience, and professional excellence positions him as one of the notable figures to watch as the APC approaches its national convention.
