The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Enugu State Branch, has extended a strong message of goodwill and solidarity to the Enugu State Government on the official flag-off of the Measles–Rubella (MR) Vaccination Campaign, describing the initiative as a landmark step toward safeguarding the health of children across the state.
In a statement issued under the leadership of Rtn. Dr. Sunday Okafor, the Association commended the Enugu State Government through the Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENSPHCDA), alongside key development partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and others, for successfully launching the life-saving campaign.
The NMA described the introduction and scale-up of the Measles–Rubella vaccine as a bold and proactive public health intervention that reflects Enugu State’s unwavering commitment to disease prevention, health security, and the advancement of universal health coverage. According to the Association, the campaign demonstrates an evidence-based approach that prioritizes preventive healthcare, strengthens routine immunization systems, and significantly reduces avoidable childhood morbidity and mortality.
The medical body particularly applauded the State Government and ENSPHCDA for what it termed exemplary coordination, extensive community engagement, and high-level preparedness ahead of the rollout. It noted that the establishment of robust surveillance and response mechanisms for Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) further reassures the public of vaccine safety and the integrity of the immunization process.
The Association also acknowledged the invaluable technical and logistical support provided by WHO, UNICEF, and other development partners, emphasizing that their continued collaboration has greatly enhanced immunization outcomes in Enugu State.
Reaffirming its commitment, the NMA Enugu State pledged full professional support to ensure the success of the campaign, particularly as it progresses into its second week targeting children aged 9 months to 14 years. The Association highlighted its readiness to provide strategic input in addressing the Human Resource for Health gap, intensify advocacy efforts, promote public education, and mobilize communities to drive high vaccine uptake and optimal coverage.
Furthermore, the NMA called on traditional rulers, faith leaders, community influencers, civil society groups, the media, and parents and caregivers to actively champion the vaccination campaign. It stressed that collective action is essential for Enugu State to achieve near-universal Measles–Rubella coverage and secure a healthier, safer future for every child.
Congratulating the state government and its partners on the successful flag-off, the Association reiterated its steadfast commitment to advancing preventive healthcare and protecting the wellbeing of Ndi Enugu.
The statement was signed by Dr. Ikemefuna Nnamani, Publicity Secretary of NMA Enugu State.
