According to him, these internal disagreements have been allowed to persist without any clear or credible roadmap for resolution, despite the establishment of reconciliation committees and repeated public assurances by party leaders
A former Governor of Benue State and senior political figure, Senator Gabriel Suswam, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent and unresolved internal crises that, according to him, have severely weakened the party. It was reportedly that he is being seriously wooed to join the Coalition Party.
Suswam made the decision public in a letter of resignation addressed to the PDP Mbagber Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. In the letter, he reflected on his long-standing relationship with the party, noting that the PDP had given him the platform to serve Nigeria in various capacities, including as a legislator, governor, and senator.
While expressing gratitude for the opportunities the party afforded him, Suswam lamented that the PDP, lonce known for unity, internal democracy, and progressive opposition has become riddled with endless leadership, structural, disciplinary, and ideological disputes.
According to him, these internal disagreements have been allowed to persist without any clear or credible roadmap for resolution, despite the establishment of reconciliation committees and repeated public assurances by party leaders.
“The PDP today appears to be perpetually trapped in crisis mode; an institution in political intensive care, with no consensus diagnosis and no agreed treatment plan in sight,” Suswam said.
He stressed that political parties should serve as platforms for ideas, discipline, and constructive engagement, rather than arenas for continuous internal warfare. However, he noted that the current state of affairs within the PDP no longer aligns with these ideals.
Suswam stated that he found it honourable and necessary to step aside, while wishing the party well should it someday muster the courage and consensus required to resolve its longstanding internal contradictions.
He concluded by formally requesting that his resignation be accepted and that his appreciation be conveyed to party members at all levels for the shared journey over the years.
