...Legion Chairman/Commandant, DCG. Dr Emeka Norman Igwesi, Commends Gov Mbah for N10 Million Donation, Unwavering Support for Veterans

The Nigerian Legion, Enugu State Council, has showered commendations on Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, describing his leadership as transformational and focused, as the Legion conferred on him the prestigious title of “Best Governor in the World.”

The honour was restated   during the official launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem, held at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, in a solemn ceremony dedicated to the memory of Nigeria’s fallen heroes and the welfare of living veterans.

In a powerful and emotionally laden address, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Enugu State Council, Deputy Commandant General (Dr.) Emeka Norman Igwesi, commended Governor Mbah for his exceptional governance content, unwavering commitment to the welfare of ex-servicemen.

Dr. Igwesi described the Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a sacred national obligation set aside not only to remember soldiers who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation’s sovereignty but also to keep faith with the dependants they left behind.

“The Remembrance Day is a period to honour our fallen heroes and heroines who laid down their lives in the service of our fatherland. It is also a time to reaffirm our commitment to the living heroes, those wounded in war, the aged, infirm, sick, bedridden, widows, orphans, and dependants who urgently require society’s recognition, care, and support,” he stated.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s numerous military engagements both within and outside the country, the Legion Chairman urged Nigerians to continually remember the horrors of war and the gallant men and women whose sacrifices made peace and democracy possible.

Dr. Igwesi, however, lamented the long-standing challenge of unfulfilled pledges made during emblem launches, noting that while promises were often made from the podium, many were never redeemed, a development he described as deeply unfortunate for veterans.

Against this backdrop, he singled out Governor Mbah as a leader who lives up to his words, stressing that the Legion’s decision to honour him was rooted in verifiable actions rather than rhetoric.

“Your Excellency, Enugu State is fast becoming a modern state. The massive transformation across infrastructure, governance, and human development has earned the admiration of military veterans. It is in recognition of these outstanding achievements that the Nigerian Legion proudly confers on you the award of ‘Best Governor in the World,’” Dr. Igwesi declared to loud applause.

He further praised the Governor, the Deputy Governor, and officials of the Government House for ensuring the success of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem launch.

Highlighting the internal reforms within the Legion, Dr. Igwesi revealed that his leadership had pursued a three-point agenda focused on sanitising, modernising, and advancing the Legion, transforming it into a more liberal, professional, and modern organisation despite prevailing economic challenges .

The Legion Chairman also drew attention to the immense potential of retired military personnel, stressing that although retired, many veterans were not tired. He urged the state government to leverage their discipline, experience, and patriotism, including members of the Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires, a well-trained and service-ready sub-body he currently heads at the national level. He said “Military veterans remain disciplined, experienced, and capable. We are always ready to serve''.

Dr. Igwesi also made far-reaching appeals to the state government, including the provision of security vehicles, approval of monthly subvention for veterans, scholarships for indigent children and orphans of fallen and living heroes, empowerment of widows, inclusion of veterans in state pilgrimage quotas, and intervention to ensure the redemption of outstanding pledges made to the Legion.

In a strong demonstration of solidarity and commitment, Governor Mbah donated ₦10 million to the Nigerian Legion, a gesture that further underscored his administration’s support for ex-servicemen and their families.

The highlight of the ceremony was the formal decoration of Governor Mbah with the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem, symbolising honour, remembrance, and the shared responsibility of preserving the legacy of Nigeria’s heroes.

The event ended on a solemn yet hopeful note, reaffirming the bond between the Enugu State Government and the Nigerian Legion, and renewing calls for sustained, structured support for those who once stood at the frontline in defence of the nation.
