Ambassador Mrs. Amaka Nweke JP, a distinguished public servant, Member IV of the Enugu State Local Government Service Commission and the chairman of committee on WASH for the commission, is set to represent Enugu State, Nigeria on the global stage as she joins world leaders, policymakers, and water-sector experts at the XIX World Water Congress scheduled to hold from December 1 to 5, 2025, at the prestigious Pickalbatros Hôtel Du Golf Palmeraie in Marrakech, Morocco. The Congress, organized by the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Equipment and Water of the Kingdom of Morocco and held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is globally recognized as the largest international event focused on water governance, innovation, climate resilience, and sustainable development. This year’s edition, themed “Water in a Changing World: Innovation and Adaptation,” will bring together an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 participants, including scientists, government officials, development agencies, civil-society actors, and private-sector leaders from across continents, to examine the world’s most urgent water challenges and the transformative solutions shaping a more resilient future.

Ambassador Nweke, who has built an admirable reputation for advocacy in environmental sustainability and community development, will be speaking on the topic “Water and Nature: Innovative Solutions for City in Nature with Water – Using Enugu’s Coal City to Water City as a Case Study.” Her presentation will spotlight Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s bold and innovative efforts to revolutionize urban water supply in Enugu State, transitioning the historic Coal City into a modern Water City through cutting-edge water projects, nature-based solutions, and forward-thinking sustainability policies. By dissecting the successes and ongoing transformation in Enugu, she intends to contribute to a global conversation that redefines how nations understand, govern, protect, and sustainably harness water resources in an era marked by climate uncertainty and rapid urbanization.

Her participation at the Congress also highlights the growing recognition of Enugu State’s ambitious water-sector reforms, which have gained national and international attention for their emphasis on innovation, resilience, and inclusiveness. Through her engagement, Ambassador Nweke is expected to position Enugu as a model for African cities seeking to align urban development with environmental stewardship, climate adaptation, and nature-based infrastructure. The XIX World Water Congress, which will explore diverse issues ranging from climate-water interfaces to urban water security, agriculture, energy, and ecosystem restoration, offers a strategic platform for cross-sector collaboration, policy dialogue, and global knowledge sharing. As the world grapples with rising water stress, environmental degradation, and governance complexities, the Congress stands as a vital meeting point for shaping the future of water policy and sustainable development.

With Ambassador Amaka Nweke’s inclusion in this prestigious global gathering, Enugu State will not only be represented at the highest level of international water discourse but will also have the opportunity to showcase its evolving water-city vision and reinforce its commitment to a greener, smarter, and more resilient future. Her participation is expected to inspire deeper conversations about Africa’s role in global water innovation and strengthen Nigeria’s presence in international environmental diplomacy, proving once again that tomorrow is indeed here.
