In another decisive raid to rid Enugu markets of extortion and unauthorized levies, the Enugu State Market Monitoring Team today, Thursday, October 2, 2025, stormed Abakpa Market, arresting several individuals allegedly involved in illegal revenue collection.

The enforcement operation, carried out by the Peter Mbah Market Monitoring Team in collaboration with security agencies, was led by Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mbah, the Senior Special Assistant to the Executive Governor of Enugu State on Market Liaison.

Addressing traders during the raid, Dr. Mbah reiterated Governor Peter Mbah’s zero tolerance for illegal taxation and extortion in Enugu markets, stressing that no community, family, or group has the authority to impose levies not approved by the state government.

He further disclosed that some of the suspects apprehended confessed to acting on the instructions of the Umu Enwene community in Abakpa Nike, who allegedly sent them to extort money from traders.

“The Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has made it clear: no revenue not approved by the state government should ever be collected. No family or community has the right to impose any levy on our traders. Every naira must go directly to government coffers,” Dr. Mbah stated firmly.

According to him, the suspects have been handed over to the police and will be charged to court immediately. He warned that anyone caught sabotaging the state’s revenue system or exploiting hardworking traders will face the full weight of the law.

The suspects, who have reportedly been extorting traders in Abakpa Market for months, are now in police custody awaiting prosecution.

The Enugu State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting traders, sanitizing all markets across the state, and ensuring that revenue collection remains transparent, lawful, and beneficial to the people.
