The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has officially released the timetable for the 2026 Local Government Chairmanship and Councillorship elections across the 17 local government areas and 260 electoral wards in Enugu State.
In a statement signed by the Executive Chairman of ENSIEC, Prof. Christian C. Ngwu, and received by Enugupress.ng, the Commission announced that the Local Government Council elections will hold on Saturday, 26th September 2026.
According to the schedule, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between 23rd January and 19th February 2026, including the resolution of disputes arising from the primaries. ENSIEC will also observe the process. Ahead of this, parties are to submit details of their primaries — including time, venue, and date — between 27th November and 12th December 2025.
The Commission further stated that the screening of chairmanship candidates’ credentials will take place at the ENSIEC headquarters, No. 3 Achi Street, Independence Layout, Enugu, on the following dates:
- 25th March 2026 – Enugu North Zone
- 26th March 2026 – Enugu East Zone
- 27th March 2026 – Enugu West Zone
ENSIEC also reminded political parties that the deadline for submission of nomination forms (ENSIEC 7 and ENSIEC 7A) for Chairmanship and Councillorship positions must comply with Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which stipulates that such submissions should be made not later than 180 days before the election.
