In a powerful tribute to visionary leadership and unwavering service to humanity, Hon. Pedro Okwudili Nwankwo, former ALGON Secretary and two-term Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, was conferred with an award of Honorary Doctorate Degree by the British American Open University, California, during a grand investiture/convocation ceremony held at the National Merit Award House, Maitama, Abuja.
The ceremony, which attracted dignitaries from across Nigeria, the academic board and beyond, had the Vice-Chancellor of the Prestigious University, Prof David Bruce conferred the honour, recognizing Hon. Nwankwo’s exceptional impact in leadership, governance, youth empowerment, and community development, culminating in this international acknowledgment of his legacy.
A proud son of Onoli in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Hon. Nwankwo’s political journey is one built on grit, vision, and purpose. Rising steadily through the ranks, he earned public trust through competence and integrity, eventually becoming a transition committe Chairman of Awgu LGA in Dec 2019, before being elected for two consecutive terms as Executive Chairman in 2020 and 2022. As Chairman, he transformed Awgu into a model of local governance, rehabilitating; constructing rural roads, electrifying communities, expanding access to education and healthcare, and championing policies that empowered over 300 youths with startup capital and skill acquisition training program.
His leadership style, a rare blend of discipline and empathy, earned him a broader platform to serve as the Secretary of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Enugu State Chapter, member Joint account allocation committee (JAAC) Enugu state, where he was instrumental in promoting local government autonomy and grassroots-driven development.
Hon. Nwankwo’s leadership footprint has since transcended his local government roots. Today, he serves as the State Secretary of the Integrity Group of Nigeria, a fast-growing national coalition committed to ethical leadership, transparency, and democratic accountability. In this role, he continues to mentor young leaders, advocate for national unity, and drive conversations around governance reforms in Nigeria.
Academically, Hon. Nwankwo is no less distinguished. A graduate of Business Administration from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), he was the student union president of his department, went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Maritime Business and International Logistics from the prestigious University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), demonstrating a broad strategic outlook that bridges theory with practice. And Elviszara Global Concept Nigeria, reflects his deep-rooted belief in sustainable empowerment and wealth creation.
In recognizing Hon. Pedro Okwudili Nwankwo with an honorary doctorate, the British American Open University, California, extolled his “exceptional commitment to people-centered governance, community resilience, and ethical leadership.” The institution noted that Nwankwo represents the kind of leadership Africa needs, authentic, inclusive, and transformational.
In his acceptance remarks, Hon. Nwankwo expressed deep gratitude to the organizers, dedicating the award to the good people of Awgu, to his imidiate family, to all Nigerian youths striving to make a difference. and to God Almighty.
“This honor is not just about me, it is about every young Nigerian who believes that leadership is a call to serve, not to rule. It is about our communities, our struggles, and our shared hope for a better country,” he said.
