A woman, Harira Muhammad Tudun Murtala, has been arraigned before the Kano Upper Shari’a Court in the Post Office area of Kano Municipality for allegedly contracting two marriages simultaneously.
According to reports, Harira had been married to her first husband, Sagiru Shuaibu T/Murtala, for six months, although they were living apart. Trouble began when Shuaibu visited her and reportedly discovered another man on his matrimonial bed, prompting him to raise alarm among neighbors.
Initially denying the marriage, Harira later admitted to being married to Shuaibu after the presiding judge, Khadi Munzali Tanko Soron-Dinki, asked her to swear by the Qur’an.
The second husband, Bello Abdullahi Yankaba, stated that he married Harira through her uncle, Abdullahi Umar, after paying a dowry of N100,000.
The court ordered the police to carry out further investigations and remanded Harira and Yankaba in a custodial facility until May 16.
