Today marks one year since Nollywood lost one of its most beloved actors and comedians, John Okafor, better known as Mr. Ibu. The pain of his passing on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62, still lingers in the hearts of his fans, colleagues, and loved ones.
Mr. Ibu was more than just a comedian; he was a national treasure, a man whose mere presence on screen could light up any room. His talent, humor, and unique comedic style made him a household name, bringing joy to millions across Africa and beyond.
In October 2023, Mr. Ibu revealed that he was battling a severe ailment that threatened to cost him his leg. While on a movie set, he fell ill and was later diagnosed with a medical condition that required urgent attention. In a heartbreaking video from his hospital bed, he pleaded with fans and well-wishers for prayers and financial support to aid his treatment.
The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Foundation stepped in on October 18, 2023, settling his medical bills, but the fight for his life was far from over. Despite undergoing seven surgeries, his condition worsened, leading to the amputation of one of his legs in November 2023. His family described the procedure as a desperate measure to save his life, but fate had other plans.
Born on October 17, 1961, in Enugu State, Nigeria, John Okafor's journey to stardom was not an easy one. He overcame struggles and challenges to become one of Nollywood’s most celebrated figures. His breakthrough came in 2004 with the movie Mr. Ibu, a role that became synonymous with his name. Throughout his career, he featured in over 200 films, including classics like Mr. Ibu in London, Police Recruit, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, and International Players. His humor was effortless, his delivery flawless, and his impact undeniable. Beyond acting, he dabbled in music, releasing songs like This Girl and Do You Know in 2020. Though his music career was short-lived, it showcased another side of his creativity and passion for entertainment.
When news of his passing broke, the Nollywood industry went into mourning. Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, described it as a “sad day for Nollywood.” Many of his colleagues, including Osita Iheme (Pawpaw), Chinedu Ikedieze (Aki), Patience Ozokwor, and others, shared emotional tributes, recalling fond memories and the impact he had on their lives. Fans across Nigeria and beyond flooded social media with messages of sorrow, gratitude, and nostalgia. His death was not just the loss of an actor but of a legend who made life a little brighter for so many.
One year after his passing, the echoes of Mr. Ibu’s laughter still resonate. His films continue to bring smiles to faces, proving that true legends never fade.
