Enugu Council Chairman Bans Masquerades from Carrying Weapons, Flogging Women:
The Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, under the leadership of Dr. Eric Odoh, has issued a stern directive prohibiting masquerades from carrying weapons, including canes, and engaging in the assault of women, girls, and perceived enemies. This announcement was made during the Monthly Holy Mass at the Council's Headquarters in Ogbede, where Dr. Odoh addressed the growing concerns over violent actions by masquerades in the area.
Dr. Odoh clarified that while masquerades are not banned in Igbo-Etiti, their activities must be conducted in an orderly and respectful manner. He emphasized that the current administration is committed to curbing the violent tendencies of some masquerades that have led to harm, injuries, and even deaths within the community. In response to the rise in such incidents, including a recent brutal attack on a female nurse by the Oriokpa Masquerade, the Chairman also inaugurated a committee focused on addressing domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence.
The new regulations also stipulate strict penalties, including imprisonment, for any masquerade who violates the directive. This move follows increasing calls from residents for action after multiple violent encounters involving masquerades. The government remains committed to protecting citizens' rights and ensuring that masquerade activities are carried out in line with societal norms and respect for others.
