Obollo Afor, January 18th, 2025

In a decisive move to protect public health, the Special Assistant to the Chairman Udenu Local Government Council, Engr. Henry Okpe, shut down the goat section of the Obollo Afor Market abattoir. The closure, which took place on Saturday, was deemed necessary due to the facility's deplorable and unsanitary conditions.

Citing the administration's commitment to prioritizing the health and well-being of its citizens, the Council emphasized the critical role of hygiene in food processing environments. The abattoir's unsanitary state posed a significant risk of contaminating meat with harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli, potentially leading to food poisoning outbreaks.

This action follows a series of complaints from concerned citizens and a thorough assessment of the facility by Onyekachi C Ugwu, Special Adviser to the Chairman on Special Duties, Engr. Okpe and myself, Comr. Prince Sebastian Odo. The inspection revealed alarming levels of waste, poor hygiene practices, and the presence of pests, all contributing to a serious health hazard.

The closure will remain in effect until the abattoir management implements a comprehensive cleanup and disinfection plan. Additionally, they are required to agree to a regular cleaning schedule to ensure the facility maintains acceptable hygiene standards moving forward.

This decisive action underscores the Udenu Local Government Chairman's commitment to protect public health. Preventing the sale of contaminated meat safeguards citizens from foodborne illnesses as well as enforcing regulations in the use of public spaces. Demonstrating zero tolerance for non-compliance with established hygiene and safety standards is not acceptable to the council administration, hence, holding abattoir owners responsible for maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for workers and consumers alike cannot be compromised.

The closure, therefore, sends a strong message that the Udenu Local Government prioritizes the well-being of its people and will take all necessary measures to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all. Engr. Okpe's swift action and dedication to upholding these standards deserve commendation.
