BREAKING! Tinubu To Approve Creation Of New State

President Bola Tinubu is poised to endorse the creation of Ijebu State, following a significant meeting with the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. The discussions, which took place on January 5 at the President’s Lagos residence, focused on the long-standing request for Ijebu to be carved out of Ogun State, making it the country’s newest state.

The Awujale emphasized that Ijebu is the only colonial-era province that remains without statehood, arguing that the region is sufficiently endowed with resources to thrive as an independent state. He pointed to the area's industrial estates, a growing airport, and other vital infrastructure as proof of its capacity for self-sufficiency and development.

Sources close to the meeting revealed that President Tinubu swiftly agreed to the proposal without extensive deliberation, signaling his support for the long-desired state creation.

The push for Ijebu State gained significant traction after Senator Gbenga Daniel of Ogun East introduced a bill to the National Assembly in November 2024. The bill, which seeks to amend Nigeria’s constitution to facilitate the creation of Ijebu State, has since passed through several legislative stages, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio championing its advancement.

Despite the growing momentum behind the proposal, there has been some opposition, with critics arguing that Nigeria is already grappling with major issues such as poverty and a high national debt. Others suggest that the creation of new states could be politically motivated, aimed at consolidating support for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential elections.

Nonetheless, supporters of the new state argue that Ijebu State will spur development in the region, bringing much-needed progress and prosperity to its people.

Additionally, talks are ongoing about the potential creation of other states, such as Anioma from Delta, which could increase Nigeria’s states from 36 to 56.

As discussions continue, the creation of Ijebu State marks a key step in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
