It was a moment of excitement and unity as Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, the Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area (LGA) who also doubles as the Deputy  Chairman of Enugu State ALGON, officially launched the 2024 Ovoko Football League in a vibrant ceremony that brought together football fans, families, and local dignitaries. The event took place at the Ovoko Football Field, which was buzzing with energy as community members gathered to celebrate the much-anticipated opening of the league.

Barr. Ukwueze, in his opening speech, warmly commended the organisers for their dedication to creating opportunities for the youth to showcase their talents and foster unity. He spoke passionately about how football can be more than just a sport it can be a powerful tool for community building, offering the youth a positive outlet for their energy and aspirations.

“Football is not just a game, it’s a way to bring us all together,” Barr. Ukwueze said, addressing the enthusiastic crowd. “It teaches us about teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Through this league, we are giving our young people a chance to grow, not just as athletes, but as leaders who will carry the spirit of this community forward.”

He urged everyone, especially the young players, to give their best both on and off the pitch. “This league is about more than just winning. It’s about building character, making lasting friendships, and embracing the values that sports instills in us. Stay focused, stay united, and remember that you are representing more than just your team—you’re representing your community.”

The event also saw the presence of Barr. Mrs. Empress Ugo Ferdinand, the wife of Igbo-Eze South council chairman, who added her support and encouragement to the occasion. She spoke on behalf of the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Ihuoma Mbah, who couldn’t attend in person but had sent her best wishes for the league’s success.

With a warm smile, Mrs. Ugo Ferdinand addressed the crowd: “On behalf of Her Excellency, the First Lady of Enugu State, I bring you greetings and heartfelt congratulations. We are so proud of this initiative that brings the community together and empowers our youth through sports.”

Mrs. Ugo Ferdinand also presented a series of thoughtful gift items to the children of Igbo-Eze South, generously donated by Mrs. Nkechinyere Ihuoma Mbah. These gifts were meant to inspire and encourage the children to continue pursuing their dreams. “Remember, no matter your path in life, whether it’s sports, academics, or any other field, you must believe in yourselves. Strive to be the best version of who you can be, and always hold onto your dreams,” she urged, before encouraging the children to keep pushing for success.

The opening match of the day was a thrilling encounter between Ajuona FC and Amachara FC two local teams with passionate supporters. The atmosphere at the stadium was electric, with both sides eager to make their mark in the opening match of the league. The crowd cheered with enthusiasm, waving banners and singing songs of support for their teams.

It was a fast-paced game, with plenty of exciting moments, and Ajuona FC emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Amachara FC. The players exhibited remarkable skill, and the match was a fitting start to what promises to be an exciting season of football for the Ovoko community.

As the match ended and the players shook hands, Barr. Ukwueze took a moment to reflect on the significance of the day. “This is just the beginning,” he said, smiling as he watched the young athletes. “I’m proud of what we’ve started here, and I know it will grow. This league will help shape our youth, not only as footballers but as individuals who can go out into the world with confidence, discipline, and a sense of responsibility.”
