On Sunday evening, irate fans of Plateau United attacked the team bus of Enugu Rangers following a goalless draw on Match Day 11 of the 2024/2025 Nigerian Football League. The Flying Antelopes, as Enugu Rangers are fondly known, were returning from the match when the attack occurred, resulting in damage to their bus and injuries to some players.
An official of the team, Felix Ifeanyi, disclosed that fans of the host team turned violent after the match ended without a winner. Expressing frustration, he said, "Today, just a draw in Jos, and Plateau United fans damaged our bus and beat our players. The cost of the damage alone runs into millions. Is this the league we envisioned? It’s well… God dey!"
The Enugu Rangers management quickly responded by issuing a statement condemning the incident and confirming that a formal petition has been submitted to the relevant authorities. The statement emphasized the team’s commitment to seeking justice for the unprovoked attack, saying, "We wish to inform you about the unfortunate incident that occurred during our match against Plateau United in Jos. The attack on our team was unwarranted, and we are taking all necessary steps to ensure justice is served. A petition has been submitted to the relevant authorities, and we will not rest until this issue is thoroughly addressed and resolved."
In response, Plateau United management released a separate statement distancing the club from the incident. According to them, the attack occurred outside the stadium premises and, therefore, beyond the club's control. Plateau United claimed that the Enugu Rangers players and officials departed the New Jos Stadium safely after the match, with the incident occurring nearly two kilometers from the stadium. The statement clarified that, as per security protocol, the host team's responsibility ends once the visiting team exits the stadium grounds. Plateau United’s General Manager, Habila Hosea Mutla, affirmed, "We are a peaceful club who believe in either of three outcomes when we step out for an encounter: to win, lose, or draw. We will do everything within our power to maintain law and order within the stadium perimeter."
The unfortunate incident has brought to light concerns about player and team security during league matches, highlighting the need for stronger security measures to protect athletes and officials from violence and hooliganism. The petition by Enugu Rangers will likely initiate an investigation to identify and penalize those responsible, ensuring that such incidents do not mar the Nigerian Football League in the future.
