BREAKING: Police Refunds N2.3 Million Extorted From Igbo Businessman




The Nigerian Police Force has taken decisive action against officers involved in the alleged extortion of ₦2.3 million from one Mr. Nwosu Ndubuisi. This development was confirmed in a statement by the Zone 7 Police Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP M.B. Abdulkadir, shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, November 15, 2024.


According to the statement, the sum of ₦2.3 million, which was reportedly extorted, has been fully recovered and returned to the victim. The officers implicated in the act have been identified, detained, and subjected to disciplinary proceedings.


Providing further details, Abdulkadir emphasized the Nigerian Police Force's commitment to transparency and accountability, as championed by the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun. He stated:  

“Further to the earlier statement issued on the alleged extortion of one Mr. Ndubuisi Nwosu by some officers of Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, investigation was carried out, the officers allegedly involved in the extortion have been identified and detained, while disciplinary proceedings have commenced against them. The sum of ₦2.3 million has been recovered and returned to Mr. Ndubuisi Nwosu."


The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, AIG Benneth C. Igweh, reassured the public of the Force's commitment to justice. He reaffirmed that updates on the disciplinary proceedings would be made available to the public. Igweh also reiterated the Zone’s unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law, ensuring public safety, and protecting lives and property.


This case garnered significant public attention after Harrison Gwamnishu, an activist and X user, exposed the alleged extortion. According to the report, the officers involved coerced Mr. Ndubuisi into selling his laptop at Banex Plaza, Abuja, to secure his bail. Following the revelation, AIG Igweh promptly ordered an investigation into the matter.


This incident underscores the Nigerian Police Force’s efforts to restore public trust by addressing misconduct within its ranks. The recovery of the extorted funds and the immediate disciplinary action against the errant officers serve as a testament to the Force’s commitment to accountability and justice.
