The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the brutal murder of a 48-year-old man, Mr. Michael Nnaji, a native of Amuri in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, who was residing in Ngbo Amaka, Ngbo, within Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joshua Ukandu, upon receiving information about the incident, the Ohaukwu Police Divisional Headquarters was contacted, and officers promptly moved to the scene to commence an investigation. DSP Ukandu noted that although detailed reports are still forthcoming, the State Police Command is committed to conducting an in-depth investigation to ensure those responsible are apprehended and face justice.
Mr. Nnaji, a businessman and a local security member in Ngbo Community, reportedly fell victim to a violent assault around 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday night. Sources indicate that two masked gunmen on a motorcycle invaded his business premises, shooting him twice before proceeding to set his body ablaze.
A witness, who is also a family member, recounted the harrowing experience, explaining that the gunmen entered the premises from two different points. “We were at the shop, and at about 9:45 p.m., two young men arrived on a motorcycle wearing masks. One came in from the front door while the other entered through the back. They went straight to the parlour where Mike was and shot him twice.”
The witness continued, "After hearing the gunshots, I ran out through the back. One of them grabbed me, seized my phone, and tried to drag me back, but I managed to escape and sought refuge in a nearby compound."
In the aftermath of the attack, residents of the area reportedly fled in fear, leaving Mr. Nnaji and his attackers alone. After shooting him, the assailants set his body on fire. His charred remains were discovered along with extensive property damage; household items including two deep freezers, television sets, chairs, tables, cooking utensils, cash, and other valuables were completely destroyed in the blaze.
Family members described Mr. Nnaji as a quiet and friendly man who had lived in the community for many years. They expressed shock and confusion over the brutal attack.
A local community leader, speaking anonymously, urged security agencies in Ebonyi State to take action against the escalating violence in Ohaukwu Local Government Area. “The spate of killings in this area is alarming. We demand justice for Mr. Nnaji and call on authorities to protect our community.”
Mr. Nnaji’s remains have been transferred to the Ezzamgbo General Hospital mortuary. Meanwhile, shocked residents of Ngbo Amaka gathered in small groups, discussing the tragic event. Among the early visitors to the scene was Ohaukwu Local Government Council Chairman, Mr. Ikechukwu Odono, who pledged support to the bereaved family and reiterated the need for enhanced security in the region.
