Kebbi Residents Celebrate Killing of Hippopotamus, Distribute Meat to Villagers

In Yauri town, Kebbi State, local fishermen successfully hunted down a female hippopotamus that had been terrorizing the area. The hunt was carried out on the orders of the Kebbi State Governor, following the tragic death of a staff member of the Emir of Yauri, Zayyanu Abdullahi.

The hippo had caused concern in the community after it killed one of the Emir’s staff and a local farmer. Acting on these incidents, the Emirate mobilized about 40 fishermen from the area, armed with bows and arrows, to track down and kill the dangerous animal. After a prolonged search along the River Niger, the fishermen finally subdued the animal.

Videos circulating online captured the moment when the hippopotamus was killed and later transported to the Palace of the District Head of Gungu, Kasimu Aliyu. There, it was slaughtered, and its meat distributed among the villagers as a gesture of relief and celebration.
