The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially removed the Group D second-leg fixture between Nigeria and Libya from the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The match was originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday, following Nigeria's 1-0 victory over Libya in the first leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
However, an unforeseen crisis erupted when the Nigerian national team and its officials faced a harrowing 14-hour ordeal at a Libyan airport. Reports indicate that the team was subjected to mistreatment, leading to a decision by the Super Eagles to return to Nigeria. This triggered CAF to open an investigation into the incident.
In response to the situation, the Libyan Football Federation accused Nigeria of sabotage and has threatened to pursue legal action. Meanwhile, CAF's latest update, shared via its official Twitter account, listed the matches scheduled for Tuesday but notably excluded the Libya vs Nigeria game.
The controversy surrounding the treatment of the Super Eagles has gained significant attention. This comes after Nigeria expressed frustration over the handling of their airport experience in Libya, which could have a lasting impact on the AFCON qualifying campaign.
