Health as the True Wealth: PTA Chairman Addresses Urgent Needs at FGC Enugu Clinic

On October 9th, 2024, Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu experienced a pivotal moment in its commitment to student health and well-being. The Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) Chairman, Chief Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mba accompanied by the welfare committee delivered on his promise to prioritize the clinic’s functionality, reaffirming that “health is wealth,” a truth echoed throughout history. As the philosopher Virgil once said, "The greatest wealth is health," a sentiment that guided Dr. Mba’s observations during his visit to the clinic.

In his speech, Dr. Mba identified three immediate needs: a well-equipped ambulance,  a stand-by driver and  oxygen for emergencies. He stressed that these resources were fundamental to protecting students in times of critical health crises. Echoing Thomas Fuller’s timeless words, "Health is not valued till sickness comes," Dr. Mba emphasized that investing in the clinic’s emergency response capabilities was essential to safeguarding the future of the students.

Building on his observations, Assistant Director of Nursing (ADN), Mrs. Caroline Onyeziligbo, outlined further requirements to ensure optimal care at the clinic. She mentioned the need for consistent electricity, security measures such as CCTV cameras, a pumping machine to supply water to the toilets, and a television to enhance the mental and social well-being of students during their clinic visits. Additional medical equipment such as sugar-testing machines and blood pressure monitors, alongside the recruitment of NYSC corps *Nurses and Doctors and a general  paediatrician were also highlighted to address staff shortages and to enhance efficiency.

Mrs. Onyezuruigbo noted, “A healthy mind in a healthy body,” as Juvenal wisely remarked, underscoring the clinic’s broader role in nurturing both the physical and mental health of students.

As the PTA Chairman and his team work hard to meet these urgent needs, the words of Mahatma Gandhi remind us of the core truth: “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” This effort by the PTA Chairman marks a turning point in the school’s history, ensuring that the foundation of student success is firmly rooted in their health.

With this renewed focus on student well-being, Chief Hon. Dr. Chinedu Mba’s leadership exemplifies a forward-thinking approach that places the students’ health at the forefront. His commitment to ensuring a healthier school environment stands as a testament to his dedication and compassion.
