The situation became particularly dire when the Ikwerre Local Government Secretariat was set ablaze amidst growing unrest. This development follows the arson attack on the Eleme Local Government Council Secretariat, which was reportedly destroyed by unidentified gunmen on the day newly elected chairmen were expected to assume office. The Eleme incident left a portion of the secretariat in ruins and heightened fears of further violence across the state.

In addition to Ikwerre and Eleme, there are reports of gunshots in the Oyigbo Local Government Area, adding to the growing list of troubled councils. These incidents have sparked panic among residents, who fear that the violence may spread further in the coming days.

The violence erupted just hours after Saturday’s election results were announced, where opposition parties such as the Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), and Labour Party (LP) won seats in various local government areas. The results seem to have triggered a wave of discontent, culminating in the destruction of public properties and clashes between political factions.

Videos circulating on social media show flames consuming parts of the secretariats, with bystanders alleging that political disputes were behind the attacks. In one particular video, a voice can be heard accusing two individuals of orchestrating the arson, but no official confirmations have been made.

So far, no arrests have been reported in connection with the violent incidents, and law enforcement agencies have yet to release an official statement. However, earlier reports indicated that police officers were vacating several local government areas, leaving a security vacuum in regions like Eleme.

As the unrest unfolds, there is growing pressure on the Rivers State government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to intervene decisively and prevent further escalation. The crisis has not only disrupted local governance but has also placed a spotlight on the fragility of peace in the wake of the highly contested elections.

Local residents and political analysts alike are watching closely as events continue to unfold, hoping that authorities can restore order and bring those responsible for the violence to justice. For now, Rivers State remains on edge, with many fearful that the situation may spiral out of control if not swiftly.
