A PLEA TO IGBO ELITES!
Hon. Theophilus Chukwu, a visionary young leader and passionate advocate for igbo unity, has made a heartfelt plea to Igbo elites, political stakeholders, traditional rulers, and religious leaders. His call is clear: rally around and unite in facilitating the immediate and unconditional release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who remains in prolonged detention by Nigeria's Department of State Services (DSS).
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in Hon. Chukwu’s view, embodies the same spirit as His Excellency, the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Ikemba Ndigbo, who devoted his life to advocating for the rights of the poor, the marginalized, and the underrepresented. Both Kanu and Ojukwu were born into privilege yet chose paths of selfless service for the sake of their people. Hon. Chukwu draws this parallel to remind Igbo elites and stakeholders that, just as Ojukwu’s influence inspired and uplifted Ndigbo, so too does Kanu’s commitment to self-determination inspire millions today.
Hon. Chukwu underscores that the quest for self-determination, championed by Kanu and IPOB, is a fundamental human right protected under the United Nations Charter. Nigeria, as a signatory to the UN Charter, is obligated to honor this right, which reinforces Kanu’s legal stance. Multiple judgments from local and international courts have validated that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has committed no crime under any legal framework. Instead, Hon. Chukwu argues, it is the Nigerian government that has perpetrated unjust actions against Kanu and, by extension, Ndigbo. This continuous detention, despite court rulings mandating Kanu’s release, raises serious questions about the rule of law and the protection of fundamental human rights in Nigeria.
In light of the recent video in which a member of Kanu’s legal team expressed concern over restricted access to him on October 23, 2024, despite court orders permitting visitation, Hon. Chukwu issues a distress call to Igbo elites and their allies across Nigeria. He urges Southeast and South-South governors, as well as their counterparts in the Southwest, to unite and approach President Bola Tinubu, advocating strongly for Kanu’s freedom. He appeals to these influential figures to convey to the President the overwhelming consensus: Kanu has violated no law and should be released immediately and unconditionally.
Hon. Chukwu is convinced that Kanu’s release would signify a transformative step towards peace and reconciliation within the region, providing Ndigbo with a renewed sense of justice. He passionately implores these leaders to seize this opportunity to address not only the injustices suffered by Kanu but also the broader marginalization faced by the Igbo community.
“A peaceful and prosperous future for Ndigbo hinges upon justice for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” Chukwu asserts. “We must not allow this injustice to continue, nor can we remain silent when one of our own is being held captive unjustly. It is time to act, to come together in unity, and demand what is right and just.”
With a resounding sense of urgency, Hon. Theophilus Chukwu concludes with a powerful plea:
