Enugu PDP Chairman Vows to Reclaim Seats Lost to Labour Party in 2023 Elections

The newly elected chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Dr. Martin Chukwunwike, has declared a renewed determination to restore the party's dominance in the state by reclaiming all the legislative seats lost to the Labour Party during the 2023 general elections. Dr. Chukwunwike's resolve comes as a rallying call for unity within the PDP, aiming to mend the divisions that contributed to the party's poor performance last year.

During the 2023 elections, the PDP suffered significant losses, surrendering two of the three senatorial seats (Enugu North and Enugu East), seven out of eight House of Representatives seats, and 14 out of the 24 House of Assembly seats to the Labour Party. Despite these setbacks, the PDP narrowly secured the governorship, preserving its leadership in the state.

In his inaugural address after being sworn in alongside other newly elected state officials on Monday, Dr. Chukwunwike emphasized the importance of reconciliation within the party. He acknowledged that internal disputes and defections were major factors leading to the unexpected electoral defeats.

"The task before us is clear: we must bring back those who left the party in protest and ensure that no seat is lost to the opposition in future elections," Dr. Chukwunwike stated. He expressed confidence that the PDP could regain its footing through the performance of its government in Enugu State, which he believes will drive the party's resurgence across the Southeast.

Dr. Chukwunwike underscored the significance of unity and discipline within the party, stating, "In PDP, the party is supreme. In PDP, the governor is the leader of the party." He urged party members to focus on the successes of the Mbah administration, which he credited with making significant strides in the state within just one year.

"The governor is already showing the way. Within one year, he has done what others couldn’t do in four years. Our task now is to bring all those who have left back to the party to have one big family once again," he said.

Dr. Chukwunwike concluded by affirming his belief in the people of Enugu, noting that they have demonstrated their loyalty and resilience in the face of political challenges. He expressed optimism that the PDP would emerge stronger and more unified, poised to reclaim the seats lost in 2023 and solidify its position as the leading party in Enugu State.

The PDP in Enugu now faces the crucial challenge of rebuilding trust and cohesion within its ranks, as it prepares for future electoral battles. The new leadership under Dr. Chukwunwike has set its sights on a comprehensive recovery, with the ultimate goal of restoring the party's dominance in the state's political landscape.
