Enugu LG Election: CAN Warns Against Violence, Manipulation

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the apex Christian body in Nigeria, has issued a stern warning regarding the upcoming local government elections in Enugu State, calling for nonviolence and strict adherence to free, fair, and credible election standards. The call was made on Monday by the Chairman of the Enugu State Chapter of CAN, Rev. Amb. Emmanuel Ositadinma Edeh, during a press briefing in Enugu, as he responded to numerous complaints concerning potential violence and or possiblemanipulations ahead of the September 21st elections.

Rev. Edeh, expressed deep concern over reports reaching his office about alleged plans to manipulate the electoral process.

In his statement, he pointed out that all Party Stakeholders and the Electorate must embrace peace instead of violence in this election, noting that violence is an evil wind which does no one any good. He emphasised that no one should contemplate  altering the results of the elections, urging security agencies to be vigilant and proactive in preventing any form of electoral malpractice. "Any individual who dares to engage in such sinister ideas will face the wrath of God," Rev. Edeh declared, urging all relevant stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the election.

In light of these concerns, the CAN leader has called for a special day of prayers this week and directed all LGA CAN Leaders to gather on Thursday on September 19, 2024, as the concluding day of the prayers, ahead of the polls, to invoke divine intervention for peaceful and successful elections. He emphasized that the prayers would focus on ensuring that God’s will prevails and that the election is free from violence, manipulation, and other forms of electoral malpractices.

Known for his strong stance against all forms of societal ills, Rev. Edeh called on all Enugu residents to exercise their civic duty by coming out in large numbers on election day to vote for their preferred candidates. He urged them to be peaceful and law-abiding throughout the process, assuring them that their safety is paramount as he prayed for God's protection over the electorate.

In a very strong manner, Rev. Edeh advised all political aspirants to seek God's guidance and grace in their quest for leadership, cautioning them against resorting to election rigging or other forms of manipulation. "Those who seek power through dishonest means will be held accountable, both in the eyes of man and God," he warned.

Rev. Edeh also used the opportunity to commend the Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his ongoing efforts to maintain peace, security, and development across the state. He acknowledged the governor’s innovative transformations, development strategies and leadership skills, and called on all political actors to follow his example by prioritizing the interests of the people and ensuring that democracy are delivered to the people.

In conclusion, while the local government elections draw near, CAN's warning serves as a clarion call for all stakeholders, from the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) to political parties, candidates, and their supporters, to act with integrity and ensure that the will of the people prevails.
