The Enugu State Government has launched a transition from Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs. This initiative was announced by Dr. Obi Ozor, Commissioner for Transport, following the State Executive Council meeting in Enugu.
Dr. Ozor highlighted that the council recognized the need for the state and its citizens to shift from petrol to CNG, which could reduce fuel and transportation costs by nearly 50%. This shift aims to benefit transport operators and commuters by creating a more affordable and sustainable transportation system. The government plans to purchase new buses and support private sector investments in the transport sector. Additionally, the state has partnered with Greenville Energy to facilitate this transition.
Vehicle owners interested in converting their cars from petrol to CNG are encouraged to register with the Ministry of Transport. The state government is also collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Transport to provide the necessary CNG conversion kits.
In a related development, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, announced the creation of a new Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. This ministry will oversee investments in energy and mineral resources, reflecting the abundance of such resources in Enugu State. This decision aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s earlier signing of the Enugu State Electricity Law, which mandates the establishment of an independent regulatory body for the energy sector.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will also promote investments in renewable energy and coal-to-power projects. According to Prof. Onyia, the new ministry will begin operations immediately, with preparations underway for its budget and structural setup. Recruitment for qualified personnel will follow, and appointments will be directed by the governor.
The new ministry will complement the Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Environment, ensuring coordinated efforts to address environmental concerns and energy production from sources such as gas and coal. This collaboration aims to reduce carbon emissions and enhance overall efficiency.
The government’s actions are part of a broader effort to modernize Enugu State’s infrastructure, reduce environmental impact, and create investment opportunities in the energy and transportation sectors.
