The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku, over allegations of embezzling N27 billion during his tenure as governor.
Ishaku, who served as governor for eight years before leaving office in 2023, was reportedly taken into custody at his Abuja residence in the early hours of Friday. Sources within the EFCC confirmed his arrest, revealing that the former governor is facing at least 15 charges related to financial misconduct.
An insider at the anti-graft agency disclosed that Ishaku’s arrest was the result of a long-term investigation that began after he stepped down as governor. "We’ve been investigating him covertly since he left office. There are significant instances of financial malfeasance under his administration," the source revealed.
Further reports indicate that Ishaku’s failure to provide satisfactory explanations for discrepancies in the state's financial records led to his detention. The EFCC is said to have compiled substantial evidence against the former governor, and his arraignment in court is expected soon.
The spokesman for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest but declined to provide further details on the case.
Ishaku's arrest adds to a growing list of former governors facing corruption charges, including Yahaya Bello, the ex-governor of Kogi State, who is currently under investigation for allegedly siphoning N80.2 billion during his time in office.
The EFCC’s crackdown on corrupt politicians continues to dominate the headlines as the agency intensifies efforts to hold former public office holders accountable for financial impropriety.
