A frontline women rights and community development advocacy group, Women Support Women Community Network (WOSCONET) has commended the Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Ndubisi Mbah for his continuous efforts to uplift women in agriculture.
This recognition follows the enrollment of several Enugu women and youths in the 90-Day Youth Free Agro Boot Camp at Songhai Farms, Owerri, Imo State. The boot camp, which is part of a larger initiative aimed at fostering youth involvement in agriculture, is sponsored by the Enugu State Government in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation and Songhai Farms.
In a statement signed by the President of WOSCONET, Mrs. Amaka Nweke, the organization expressed profound gratitude to the governor for his "unwavering commitment to agricultural development and food security in the state."
Mrs. Nweke described the initiative as a significant step towards empowering women and youth, especially in the agricultural sector.
“We are elated to announce that some of our members are beneficiaries of the ongoing distribution of free fertilizers, power tillers, and other agro inputs for registered farmers in Enugu State.
"This is a clear demonstration of Governor Peter Mbah’s dedication to improving agricultural productivity and alleviating poverty,” Mrs. Nweke said.
She further highlighted the group's recent collaboration with the State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro Industrialization led by the Commissioner, Hon. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, praising him for ensuring that WOSCONET members were included in the agricultural support programmes.
“Our members who are registered farmers with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro Industrialization have received their fertilizers after verification. To crown it all, some of our members, aged 18 to 35, are already in Songhai in Owerri for the agro-business incubation and support system training,” she added.
She explained that the 90-Day Youth Free Agro Boot Camp at Songhai Farms was designed to provide intensive training in agricultural practices, business incubation, and networking opportunities for young farmers, adding that the programme aimed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the agro-business sector and contribute to Nigeria’s food security goals.
