The Enugu State Chapter of the African Women Lawyers Association (ENAWLA) made a significant stride in its advocacy for women's rights and legal reforms by paying a courtesy visit to Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechi Mbah, the wife of the Governor of Enugu State. The visit, which took place at the Government House in Enugu, was led by the State Coordinator of ENAWLA, His Worship, Magistrate Ifeoma Nwagbara.
Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechi Mbah, warmly received the delegation, expressing her support for the association’s efforts and her willingness to collaborate with them through her foundation, Custos Care Foundation. The foundation, which is dedicated to various philanthropic and social causes, has now broadened its focus to include legal matters, particularly those affecting women and vulnerable groups.
During the meeting, Magistrate Ifeoma Nwagbara outlined the goals of ENAWLA and sought the support of Mrs. Mbah in advancing these objectives. One of the key topics discussed was the forthcoming ENAWLA symposium, which aims to address critical issues surrounding gender-based violence and the implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law in Enugu State.
Magistrate Nwagbara emphasized the urgent need to promote the enforcement of the VAPP Law, which has been a cornerstone of the association’s advocacy. In particular, she highlighted the importance of establishing a special court dedicated to the prosecution of gender-based violent crimes. This, she argued, would ensure the swift and effective dispensation of justice for victims, many of whom suffer from delays in the judicial process.
Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechi Mbah, responded positively to the proposals, acknowledging the importance of a specialized court for handling cases of gender-based violence. She advised that ENAWLA formalize their suggestions in writing and submit them to her office for further consideration. This gesture from Mrs. Mbah signifies a potential landmark in the fight against gender-based violence in Enugu State, aligning with her broader commitment to social justice and women's empowerment.
The delegation from ENAWLA included several prominent members: Mrs. Nnenna Anozie, Esq., the Assistant State Coordinator; Mrs. Ngozi Enyosiobi-Abafor, Esq., the Secretary; Mrs. Diana Adeoye, Esq., the Welfare Secretary II; Mrs. Chizoba Agbo, Esq., the Public Relations Officer; Ms. Sylvia Abanah, Esq.; and Mrs. Nnenna Nwomeh, Esq. Each member contributed to the discussions, underscoring the collective commitment of the association to effecting positive change in the legal landscape for women in Enugu State.
The meeting with Her Excellency is a testament to ENAWLA's dedication to fostering partnerships that will ensure the sustainability and continued growth of the association's initiatives. It also highlights the current administration's proactive approach to addressing issues of gender inequality and violence in the state.
ENAWLA remains committed to its mission of advocating for the rights of women and ensuring that the law serves as a tool for justice and equity. The association looks forward to working closely with Mrs. Nkechi Mbah and other stakeholders to achieve these goals.
