Nsukka Local Government Area (LGA) has triumphed at the 2024 Enugu Under-15 Youth Games, securing an impressive haul of 43 medals, which includes 21 Gold, 11 Silver, and 11 Bronze. This remarkable achievement earned them the first-place prize of one million naira.
Following closely, Oji-River LGA clinched the second position with 33 medals, composed of 14 Gold, 12 Silver, and 7 Bronze, taking home a cash prize of five hundred thousand naira. Enugu North LGA finished in third place, winning a total of three hundred thousand naira.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the games during the closing ceremony. He emphasized the Enugu State Government's unwavering commitment to sports development, announcing the creation of a comprehensive database of athletes to track and foster their growth.
"We have built a robust database of athletes, ensuring that their progress can be monitored and nurtured. This initiative will aid in their continuous development, and we are confident that our athletes will make Enugu State proud at the upcoming National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State," Ekweremadu stated.
In addition, Ekweremadu highlighted the efforts made in talent scouting, with a dedicated committee selecting promising athletes during the games. Those identified will be invited to a training camp to prepare for the national stage.
Addressing the young athletes, Ekweremadu encouraged them to remain dedicated to their craft. "If you have a talent, don’t give up. Continue to work hard, for there is a reward for diligence. Today, you have all exceeded our expectations by displaying not only athletic prowess but also the values of discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Whether or not you take home a medal, you are all winners in our eyes."
He noted that the primary objective of the games was to identify and nurture the best athletes who will represent Enugu State at the National Youth Games. "We have witnessed outstanding performances, and I am confident that those chosen will make our state proud on the national stage."
Ekweremadu also acknowledged the vital role played by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), sponsors of the Under-15 Youth Games. "The partnership with CCCC underscores the importance of collaboration in promoting sports development in Enugu State. Their support has not only empowered our young athletes but has also contributed to the socio-economic upliftment of our communities."
As the games concluded, Ekweremadu encouraged the young athletes to continue striving for excellence. "Keep pushing your limits, dream big, and never forget the values you have learned during these games. This marks not just the end of a competition, but the beginning of a new era for sports in Enugu State."
Among the athletes who shone brightly was Judith Chizaramekpere Ekumadu, a student of Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Nsukka. Ekumadu secured Gold medals in the 100 meters race, 200 meters race, and the 4x100 meters relay. Expressing her joy, she credited her school's support and shared her aspiration to represent Nigeria in the future.
Mrs. Martina Ugwoke, Head of Personnel Management at Nsukka LGA, expressed her delight at their victory, attributing their success to thorough preparation. She assured that they would continue to work hard to maintain their lead and promised that the athletes would be celebrated upon their return.
The 2024 Enugu Under-15 Youth Games not only showcased exceptional athletic talent but also set the stage for the next generation of sports stars in Enugu State.
