UNN Commences Investigation on Death of First-Year Student Found in Campus Drainage


The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of a first-year student, Favour Okenyi, whose body was discovered in a campus drainage. The university administration, in conjunction with state security operatives, is working to uncover the circumstances that led to this tragic event.


According to a statement obtained by PUNCH Metro on Monday from the university's acting Public Relations Officer, Okwun Omeaku, the deceased was a 100-level student in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science. Okenyi was reported missing after attending a chemistry practical, sparking concerns and a search for her whereabouts.


The lifeless body of Okenyi was discovered on Friday evening near the Eni Njoku male hostel, close to the university's Akanu Ibiam Stadium junction. The discovery has since circulated on social media, with multiple videos and photos depicting the distressing scene in what appears to be a drainage system.


Describing the incident as shocking, Omeaku expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family and affirmed the university's commitment to collaborating with security agencies to prevent such incidents in the future.


"The university community was shocked on Friday, July 5, by the distressing discovery of a lifeless body found in a drainage near the Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN," Omeaku stated. "The university administration is deeply saddened by the loss of our student and extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased for the tragic death of such a promising young student."


He further assured that the management is working closely with security agencies and the deceased's family to uncover the details surrounding her death and prevent any potential recurrence of such incidents.


"The circumstances surrounding the death are currently under investigation that will aid investigations and fish out perpetrator/s of the evil act," Omeaku concluded.


As the investigation progresses, the university community remains on edge, awaiting answers and hoping for justice for Favour Okenyi. The tragic loss of such a promising student has cast a pall over the institution, prompting calls for increased security measures on campus to protect the welfare of students.
