The Federal Government has commenced the construction of a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) module assembling plant in Enugu State, a project estimated to cost over N60 billion. This landmark initiative, the first of its kind in Nigeria, is sited in the Ihunekwagu community in Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government Area.
During the foundation laying ceremony on Saturday, Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, highlighted the project's importance and attributed it to President Bola Tinubu's commitment to the South East region. "This project reflects the President's dedication to advancing the South East and ensuring its development," said Nnaji. "The South East Development Commission was recently signed into law, promising billions in developmental projects and funds for the region."
Nnaji further urged the Igbo community to disregard the planned nationwide protests, emphasizing that President Tinubu's administration is focused on improving their living standards. "Ndigbo, we should not engage in protests. Every moment spent protesting is a lost opportunity for economic gains. The President is committed to our development, and this project alone will generate substantial employment and income for our people."
The Minister stressed the inclusive and non-discriminatory approach of President Tinubu's administration. "The President, with his private sector experience, understands the importance of equitable development. This project, costing over N60 billion, is a testament to his focus and commitment."
In his remarks, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, underscored the administration's efforts to diversify energy sources. "We are shifting towards sustainable energy with solar power. By domesticating solar panel production, we ensure affordable access to electricity for all Nigerians, decentralizing power generation from the national grid."
Chief Chimaobi Atu, House of Representatives Member for Enugu North/Enugu South Federal Constituency, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for initiating the project in the South East. "This initiative will drive economic transformation in Enugu State and the region. It will create jobs, utilize locally sourced materials, and leverage our coal resources, addressing both economic and security challenges."
