In a strategic move to foster dialogue and strengthen relations amidst efforts to reposition the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, the Caretaker Committee of the party, led by Barr. Steve Oruruo, paid courtesy visits to key security heads in the state capital, Abakaliki.
On Wednesday, 3rd July 2024, Barr. Oruruo, along with a delegation of PDP officials, visited the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the State Security Service (SSS). They were warmly received by Dr. Willie Etim, Commandant of NSCDC, and G. Oluda, Director of SSS.
After the meetings, Barr. Oruruo briefed the press, emphasizing the party’s dedication to supporting security initiatives that prioritize citizens' safety and well-being. He stressed the importance of proactive measures and collaborative strategies to address evolving threats and maintain stability in the volatile Nigerian political landscape.
“Our visits today are to foster dialogue and mutual understanding between the leadership of Ebonyi PDP and security agencies. It also reflects our commitment to working closely with security agencies to ensure a safe and secure environment for all citizens,” Barr. Oruruo stated.
He elaborated that the visits were in line with the mandate from the National Working Committee of the PDP to restore peace within the Ebonyi PDP. Recognizing the essential role of security agencies, Oruruo highlighted the need for a strong partnership to achieve these goals.
“We want to create an environment of peace because the new caretaker committee came with a calculated attempt to reorganize the party, rekindle its spirit, and foster a plurality of opinions. We regard these agencies as vital partners in maintaining law and order. We appeal to them to continually collaborate with our party and ensure their presence at our events. This is not about preparing for conflict but about ensuring a sense of security that deters violence,” he added.
Barr. Oruruo expressed his satisfaction with the outcomes of the visits, noting the positive atmosphere and the pledges of support from the security heads. “I am pleased with the atmosphere they provided and the encouragement they gave us today. Their pledge to support the party in terms of security and other necessary assistance is reassuring. This cooperation is crucial to achieving the right results in Ebonyi,” he concluded.
These visits mark a proactive step by the Ebonyi PDP to foster a secure and collaborative environment, ensuring the party's efforts to reorganize and strengthen are supported by robust security measures.
