In a grand celebration of democracy and leadership, former Nigerian Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami A. Abubakar GCFR (Rtd.), called for renewed focus on astute leadership and the sustenance of democracy across Africa during a public lecture held in his honor by Leadership Scorecard. The event marked the 25th anniversary of Nigeria's democracy and was hosted at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja.
The event, titled "The Legacy of Abdulsalami A. Abubakar in the Sustenance of Democracy in Africa," featured a distinguished audience including former First Lady and Chief Judge of Niger State, Hon. Justice Fati Lami Abubakar, CON, LLD, diplomats, academics, and international representatives.
Reflecting on his tenure, Gen. Abubakar recalled Nigeria's challenging political landscape in June 1998. His administration made swift moves to restore trust and democracy, releasing political prisoners and developing an electoral system for free, fair, and transparent elections. These efforts culminated in the successful 1999 general elections, a milestone for Nigeria and a beacon of hope for Africa.
Gen. Abubakar emphasized that the journey towards democratic consolidation requires continuous nurturing and commitment to good governance, the rule of law, and respect for human rights. He warned against the dangers of autocracy and corruption, advocating for leadership that inspires trust, fosters unity, and drives accountable governance.
Since transitioning to democratic governance, Abubakar has continued to promote peace and sustainable development through the Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies, established in 2002. The Institute addresses conflict transformation and development through advanced research and education.
Despite progress in democratic governance, challenges such as poverty, inequality, and insecurity persist. Gen. Abubakar called for strengthened institutions, investment in education and healthcare, and youth empowerment to sustain democracy.
The lecture featured notable speakers, including Prof. PLO Lumumba, who stressed the importance of participatory governance and enlightened leadership. The event celebrated the contributions of key figures in fostering democracy, including the executive governors of Anambra, Borno, Benue, and Plateau states.
Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, the executive governor of Anambra State, was honored as Democracy Governor of the Year 2024. His recognition underscored his significant role in fostering democratic governance in Anambra State and beyond. Represented by a delegate, Soludo's contributions were celebrated for advancing democracy in Nigeria.
Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, the executive governor of Borno State, was also recognized as Democracy Governor of the Year 2024. Zulum's award highlighted his efforts in governance amidst challenging conditions in Borno State, showcasing his commitment to democratic values and effective leadership.
Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, the executive governor of Benue State, received the Democracy Governor of the Year 2024 award. Alia's recognition emphasized his dedication to improving governance and promoting democracy in Benue State, reflecting his commitment to effective leadership and community development.
The Leadership Scorecard Public Lecture, celebrating 25 years of democracy in Nigeria, served as a platform for reflecting on the progress and challenges of democratic governance. Distinguished guests, including His Eminence John Cardinal Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, the Director-General of the Department of State Services Yusuf Magaji BICHI, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa, former Senate President Sen. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, and former Nigerian Bar Association President Barr. Olu Akpata, attended the event.
Gen. Abubakar expressed profound gratitude to Leadership Scorecard Integrated for organizing the lecture and to all dignitaries and guests for their support. He highlighted the need for collective effort in sustaining democracy and inspired hope for Africa's future.
