PROGRESS: Enugu Market Road Witnesses Massive Relocation as Transporters, Business Owners Comply with Eviction Notices, Following Compensations from Enugu State Govt

Massive relocation of businesses have intensified, following the commitment between the state government and business owners at the Market Road, Holy Ghost, on the proposed Enugu Central Terminal Station and the compensations and relocation options available to those affected, most of the business and property owners had since given their customers relocation notices.

This was even as some of the transport owners, while acknowledging receipts of compensations from the state government, said the money and the new premises would allow them to continue in their businesses without loss.

“We wish to commend Governor Peter Mbah for his humane gesture and for reaching out to us. In the past, nobody would even consult you or hold any townhall meeting with you. The news would come as rumours. But the governor engaged us, made some commitments, and he’s fulfilling them,” Oliver Kingsley, a logistics owner at the Holy Ghost, said.

While work has already commenced after almost eight months of negotiation, compensations and relocations, more of the transport companies are moving to different locations hinting passengers and customers of the new development.

The Onitsha South Urban Transit Limited, the GUO Transport and Logistics Company, among others, have also joined other businesses to relocate to their new business premises.

Our correspondent, who visited Market Road early hours of Saturday observed that transporters had already placed notices of their relocations, urging their customers to join them in their new business environment.

“Dear valued customers, we’ve relocated to our New Market Park Depot due to the ongoing works here. Thank you for your continued patronage,” the notice signed by the Onitsha South Urban Transit Ltd management read.

While GUO Transport and Logistics Company and the Ecobank PLC noted that they had relocated to Okpara Avenue to continue their transport and banking businesses, the First City Monument Bank (FCMB) said it has temporarily located to Presidential Road, Enugu.
