Man Remanded in Prison for Alleged Sexual Abuse of 10-Year-Old House Help in Enugu, As Enugu State Government Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for any Form of Child Abuse ...Intensifies Crackdown on Offenders


A resident of Enugu has been sued and remanded in prison by the Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development for allegedly abusing a 10-year-old girl who was living with him and his wife as a house help.


Mr. Chijioke Anthony Nwankwo, a 40-year-old businessman residing in the Achara Layout part of Enugu Metropolis, reportedly began sexually abusing the young girl since 2023. The abuse continued until the situation was reported to the Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.


Following the report, the Ministry charged Mr. Nwankwo to court and hearing on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 resulted in the Enugu South Magistrate Court adjourning the case to June 26, 2024, while Mr Chijioke Anthony Nwankwo in the Enugu correctional facility as further investigations continue.


In her statement, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih, reiterated the Enugu State Government's stand that "no form of gender-based violence would be tolerated under Gov. Peter Mbah's administration. "Perpetrators will face the consequences and justice must be served," she stated firmly.


Hon. Enih, speaking on behalf of the state government, thanked the general public for their vigilance and for coming forward with information regarding the case. She also commended the Nigerian Police, particularly highlighting the swift response of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Uwani Division, which was instrumental in apprehending the suspect quickly.


The case has served as a stern warning to the community against engaging in harmful or abusive behavior. It underscores the critical need for continued public awareness and stringent enforcement of laws designed to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly children, from harm.


While the investigation proceeds, the Ministry and law enforcement agencies encourage the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspected cases of abuse to the relevant authorities. This incident highlights the vital role of community involvement in safeguarding children's rights and ensuring that justice is upheld.
