BREAKING: Group Calls for Ban on Popular Nsukka Oriokpa Masquerades for Brutal Attack on Female Nurse in Viral Video

Residents of Enugu State have risen to condemn the flogging of a nurse on her way to work on Sunday, 28th April 2024, by masquerades at Obeechera, Nsukka Local Government Area. The incident, captured in a viral video, shocked many as the masquerades, known as Oriokpa, relentlessly attacked the lady until she fell into a big drainage by the roadside.

According to eyewitnesses, the masquerades, who are from The n’ Owere Nsukka, have become notorious for targeting women and girls in the area. This recent incident has sparked outrage, and calls for the ban of the Oriokpa masquerades have intensified.

Reacting to the sad incident, the Heroine Women Foundation called for a thorough investigation into the actions of the masquerades and their handlers, demanding appropriate sanctions.

Ambassador Onyi Mama, the Executive Director of the Foundation, expressed her dismay over the attack, stating, “Watching the video of the attack on this helpless lady is so painful, and I wonder what has happened to our humanity. What is even more saddening is that this is a nurse, dedicated to saving lives, who was on her way to work when these conscienceless individuals descended on her, finding pleasure in her pain."

Mama continued, "How do you even begin to define this as cultural display? I call on the relevant authorities to round up anyone involved in this act to serve as a deterrent to others."

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for swift action to ensure that such barbaric acts are not repeated. As the investigation unfolds, residents hope that justice will be served, and measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
