The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken the unprecedented step of suspending rerun elections in Enugu, Kano, Akwa Ibom, and Kano states due to widespread disruptions, irregularities, and the alarming abduction of election officials.
This decision comes amidst INEC's ongoing efforts to conduct bye-elections in 26 states across the federation. However, incidents of electoral malpractice have marred the process in several key constituencies.
Enugu State:
In Enugu South 1 State Constituency, disturbing reports of disruption have surfaced, particularly in 8 Polling Units within the Uwani West Ward. INEC officials are currently investigating these incidents to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
Recall that the rerun election in Enugu for Enuhu South Urban constituency was marred by accusations of missing result sheets. Allegations suggest INEC handed over sheets to a party, leading to protests from Labour Party supporters. However, PDP members counter these claims, stating they've seen the sheets. Politicians like Senator Kelvin Chukwu express concern, demanding transparency. Meanwhile, PDP candidate Sam Ngene accuses Senator Chukwu of causing trouble, dismissing concerns about the sheets. The state REC explains the missing sheets will be replaced, but the whereabouts of key officers and original results remain unknown.
Kano State:
Similarly, in Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituencies, the electoral process has been severely disrupted, particularly in Kunchi Local Government Area, involving 10 Polling Units. These disruptions have raised concerns about the fairness and transparency of the elections in the affected areas.
Akwa Ibom State:
In Ikono/Ini constituencies, irregularities have been reported, prompting INEC to suspend rerun elections in this region. The commission is actively addressing these issues to uphold the credibility of the electoral process.
The suspension of rerun elections in these four states underscores the gravity of the situation and highlights INEC's commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner & Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, made the announcement, emphasizing the need to address disruptions, irregularities, and the safety of election officials.
As the nation awaits further updates from INEC, stakeholders are urged to remain vigilant and uphold the principles of democracy to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process. Stay tuned for more developments on this evolving situation.
