Following the disturbing case of child abuse in Anambra State, the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, has announced a reward of N2 million for any member of the public with information regarding the whereabouts of Mrs Adachukwu Okafor, an Onitsha-based Lawyer alleged to have inflicted grievous bodily harm on a minor, Happiness Nwafor.
Addressing the media on Monday, Minister Ohanenye expressed deep concern for the health of 10-year-old Happiness Nwafor, currently undergoing medical treatment in Awka, Anambra State, following the alleged attack by her guardian.
The Minister condemned the alleged actions of Mrs Okafor as unacceptable and inhuman, emphasizing the Ministry's resolve to combat all forms of child abuse. She urged the public to come forward with any vital information regarding Mrs Okafor's whereabouts, stating that the Ministry will not tolerate such barbaric acts.
The Minister, Ohanenye announced plans to review and regulate procedures for employing housemaids in Nigeria, in light of the Child Rights Act. She emphasized the Ministry's commitment to protecting vulnerable children from avoidable inhuman treatment.
In collaboration with the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs, investigations into the matter are ongoing, with the Minister affirming that the perpetrator will be brought to justice.
The Minister announced support for the victim's family to improve their economic status and discourage them from entrusting their children to others as house helps.
Recall that in her show of solidarity and collaborative efforts to address the issue, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih, earlier led a delegation from Enugu State to Anambra State. During a meeting with the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Mrs. Ify Obinabo, Hon. Mrs. Enih commended the efforts of the Anambra State Government in responding promptly to the case and ensuring the proper treatment of the victim.
The Enugu State Commissioner reiterated the commitment of the Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Governor Barr Peter Mbah and his wife, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, to pursue justice for Happiness Nwafor and hold the perpetrator accountable for her actions.
According to media reports, Happiness Nwafor was allegedly attacked by her guardian using a hot iron and a kitchen knife. The victim recounted being subjected to unimaginable suffering, including being locked in a toilet for two days without food or water.
The mother of the victim, distressed by her daughter's injuries, expressed regret over entrusting her child to her sister's daughter, Mrs Okafor, lamenting the consequences of her decision.
The search for Mrs Adachukwu Okafor continues as authorities intensify efforts to ensure justice for Happiness Nwafor and other vulnerable children in society.
