Survivors Of Plateau Massacre Narrate Heartbreaking Ordeal, Seek for Intervention

In the aftermath of the recent attacks on communities in Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local government areas of Plateau, survivors are now speaking out about the harrowing experiences they endured during the tragic events that unfolded between Saturday night and Monday morning.

The Transition Committee Chairman of Bokkos LGA, Monday Kassah, revealed that the attacks claimed 148 lives, including women and children, and left hundreds injured. The affected communities suffered extensive damage, with 1,290 houses, 82 vehicles, and 187 motorcycles burned in the 25 communities that were targeted.

Survivors seeking refuge at the Central Stadium Bokkos shared heart-wrenching stories of loss, anguish, and desperation. Christian Emmanuel, currently receiving treatment at Alheri Clinic Bokkos, recounted a futile attempt to escape the attackers. Marry Samuel expressed the pain of losing family members, including her husband, brothers, and children, as well as the destruction of their farm produce.

Tabita Timothy vividly described the brutality of the attack, emphasizing the loss of lives, homes, and harvested food. She pleaded for government intervention in their dire situation. Rifkatu Sati narrowly escaped the invasion but lamented the loss of her family's breadwinners and expressed uncertainty about her future.

Mary John, who witnessed the killings, described the horrific scenes, emphasizing that the Christmas festivities were overshadowed by the tragedy. She, like many others, sought refuge in the bush, escaping the violence with her baby boy.

Dorat David, another survivor, shared the heartbreaking account of losing her husband, mother, and children during the attacks. She conveyed the trauma of being the sole survivor in her family.

While the exact number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) is yet to be determined, thousands have fled their homes due to the violence. Shelter, food, and clothing are pressing concerns for these displaced individuals.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang addressed the IDPs, pledging government support to address their immediate needs. As the affected communities grapple with the aftermath of this tragedy, the survivors' stories stand as a stark reminder of the human cost of such violence and the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and security measures.
