Oyo State Police Command takes swift action against special constables involved in extortion incident.
The Oyo State Police Command has taken decisive action by dismissing two special constables, Kareem Fatai and Jimoh Abdul-Lukman, after a video of them demanding money from a Dutch tourist went viral.
On December 8, a video surfaced on social media capturing the officers stopping a female Dutch rider along the Iseyin-Ogbomosho road. The officers, initially conversing in Pidgin English, requested money and other items from the bewildered tourist, who struggled to comprehend their demands.
In response to this misconduct, the state Commissioner of Police, Adebola Hamzat, addressed the public on Thursday. Commissioner Hamzat affirmed the recommended punishment of dismissal for the two officers, emphasizing the need to set a precedent and deter such behavior in the police force.
“I hereby pronounce both of them dismissed from the police special constabulary. They will cease to be members of the special constabulary with immediate effect. It is hoped that this will serve as a deterrent to others who might want to perform a similar act,” warned Commissioner Hamzat.
The public has commended the swift action taken by the Oyo State Police Command, expressing relief that accountability measures are in place to address misconduct within the force. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding integrity and professionalism among law enforcement officers.
